Facebook Fan Page - creating it and maintaining it made easy

So you know you should be using Social Media (as that's what everyone's telling us) but on top of actually running your business and doing everything else you need to do when will you have the time? This post is going to show you how you can have a company page on facebook which will feed off other elements of your business meaning that you only have to monitor it and not worry about running it. (Monitoring your facebook page is optional, but as one of the key purposes of social media is to interact with your customer and clients it is important to listen and respond to them)

The foundation of social media is a blog and the success of your page relies on a blog though it isn't essential an RSS feed is actually the secret.

(if you do not have a blog but are interested in starting one then please feel free to contact us, or read some of our very first posts where we detailed the beginning of our blog.)

To being, once you have logged into facebook, using your personal account or creating a new account, (though facebook does request that profiles are not created for companies), view the bottom of the page and you will see an icon which allows you to add a page, click this and begin to set up your page, once you have configured the basic information you will be ready to customise it with some applications.

The first and possibly the most important step is to have a regular feed for your page which delivers content to your fans, this is most likely going to be provided by your blog (or an RSS feed), click on the edit notes icon in your page control panel and import blog, you will need to enter the RSS feed url which can be found following a link on your blog (if you have a wordpress blog it will likely be http://itpie.co.uk/blog/?feed=rss2 where itpie.co.uk is your domain)

Once you have the notes configured you can start to add the applications of your choice, obviously there are loads of applications for various things but as this is for your company page we'll stick with the 3 key one's below.

The first is the blog RSS feed reader, this excellent app offer's a wide range of functionality and better customization (you can pick an image to make your Facebook mini-blog look more like your actual blog) and a greater sense of control. It can be a bit buggy, but it’s worth persisting for the level of customization, and therefore attention grabbing potential.

The second app is the Twitter app, this app allows you to post to Twitter and read from your twitter account, assuming you have a twitter account, if not its worth joining, this app allows you to keep your facebook page updated regularly with your tweets, helping to keep your fans informed.

The third and final app we believe you should setup is the Statis FBML app. Neither Facebook Pages nor Profiles allow any type of HTML in the main content section, but you can add FBML and HTML applications to add more stylized elements to a Page, like clickable images, anchor text and interactive content. The Static FBML app allows you to add advanced functionality to a page by placing a customizable box in which you can render HTML or FBML (Facebook Markup Language), giving you free reign over the space to add images, video, stylized text and almost whatever else you want, we've used it for our newsletter subscription box. This app was developed by Facebook, so it’s fully supported and not prone to the problems of some third party applications.

Using the notes and the three apps above will allow you to create and post content to your facebook page without ever having to visit it, though as we said, you should monitor it as one of the goals is to get your fans interacting with you and commenting on your posts hopefully creating dialogue or at least knowing that they appreciate your content.

One last thing to do - get your fan page name so you can get the best url, follow this link http://www.facebook.com/username/ and select your Fan Page name and remember to head over to http://www.facebook.com/ITPie and become a fan of our page!
