Technorati - some more information

So technorati is the google of the blog world and you have to be on it! (apparently) In its own words technorati is:

Technorati was founded to help bloggers succeed by collecting, highlighting, and distributing the global online conversation. Founded as the first blog search engine, Technorati has expanded to a full service media company providing services to the blogs and social media sites and connecting them with advertisers who want to join the conversation, and whose online properties introduce blog content to millions of consumers.

And according to wikipedia it is:

Technorati is an Internet search engine for searching blogs, competing with Google and Yahoo!. As of June 2008, Technorati indexes 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media. The name Technorati is a portmanteau, pointing to the technological version of literati, or intellectuals.

From my basic understanding so far, effectively when you post on your blog, your blog automatically pings various websites such as technorati so that they can spider your blog and index your post, then if appropriate and good enough technorati will inform its users of your post. Now Wordpress is automatically setup to ping a collection of sites, but technorati recommends that you ping it directly, so head to settings, writing, and then at the footer you will see a space to add the technorati ping url. You may want to register with technorati and claim your blog to do this.

Ok so once you've joined technorati and claimed your blog there are two key benefits, first you have now announced to the world of technorati that your blog exists and secondly you can create watch lists where you enter key words or websites based on topics your interested in and then you can quickly view a list of blog posts relevant to your watch-list.

The first thing you may notice (at least I did) was that now I am on technorati I have a technorati authority and rank. The authority reflects the number of blogs linking to my blog, apparently each blog (not the amount of links - just the single blog) is counted as a vote and the more votes (links) you have the higher your authority, and those with the highest authority get the highest rank i.e top spot - #1! The advice on technorati to gain authority is to blog about stuff people want to read about. The obvious question here is that's all good but how to get people to find out I'm writing interesting stuff? Well you use technorati to find bloggers writing about similar stuff or people who may be interested in your blog and comment on their posts, and this will hopefully encourage them to come read your blog.

I will try to post some more on technorati as I play some more with it, so be sure to check back!
